Update on placentitis in mares: diagnosis and treatment
نویسنده
چکیده
Placentitis is estimated to affect 3 to 5% of pregnancies in Thoroughbred mares Late-term pregnancy wastage generates several million dollars of losses to the lost expense of producing a pregnancy (e.g. stud fees, semen transport, feed, vaccinations, veterinary services, etc.) Late term pregnancy loss may cause emotional stress to the owner with high expectations for the foal from a particular mating Placental pathology/insufficiency may be responsible for >60% of pregnancy losses due to abortion, stillbirth and neonatal death (up to 24 h post-delivery) Etiology and Epidemiology

Oral single dose of allopurinol in thoroughbred foals born from mares with placentitis
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Allopurinol in foals born from mares with placentitis. Twenty foals were assigned into two groups: Healthy foals (n=10), born from healthy mares and Placentitis foals (n=10), born from mares with placentitis. Five foals from each group were randomly assigned to a treatment or control group. Treatment groups received Allopurinol (40mg kg-1 ora...
متن کاملA Microdialysis Model to Detect Drugs in the Allantoic Fluid of Pregnant Pony Mares by T.A. Murchie et al.; P0618.1103
Placental transfer of penicillin and gentamicin occurs both in normal pregnant mares and mares with placentitis. Microdialysis is a useful technique for monitoring therapeutic drug levels in the equine allantoic fluid and should aid development of effective treatment protocols for mares with high-risk pregnancies.
متن کاملHow to Manage Cervical Incompetence by Application of a Cervical Cerclage Suture in the Pregnant Mare
Cervical incompetence in the mare is widely recognized as a major cause of pregnancy failure. Failure to attain adequate closure during pregnancy is a key predisposing factor to ascending placentitis. In humans, cervical insufficiency is of major concern and can result in preterm birth and lateterm abortions, similar to observations in mares. Emerging clinical and laboratory-based evidence sugg...
متن کاملAscending placentitis in the mare: A review
Ascending placentitis is a condition that occurs late in pregnancy when bacteria enter the sterile uterus from the lower reproductive tract. It leads to abortion or the birth of premature and weakened foals. Early detection and treatment of this condition is vital for ensuring the production of a viable foal.Mares with ascending placentitis often present in late term pregnancy with signs of pre...
متن کاملTransrectal ultrasonography and plasma progestin profiles identifies feto-placental compromise in mares with experimentally induced placentitis.
Transrectal ultrasonography of the caudal uterus and a progestin profile were evaluated for accuracy in identifying mares with feto-placental compromise in a model of placentitis. Twenty-two pregnant ponies were divided into four groups: (1) control mares (n=5); (2) instrumented controls (n=2); (3) instrumented inoculated mares (n=11); (4) inoculated mares (n=4). Mares in Groups 3 and 4 were in...
